Maintenance costs

Postby Eldric on Sat Jun 19, 2004 12:07 pm

Just saw something mentioned in a post on another board relating to another game and thought it might make for a decent complement to WoD's buying up skills system.

They too had buying up skills with money but also had a regular maintenance fee (no numbers were mentioned) to keep the skills at that level.

Actually this would go somewhat farther than the current death taxes system. For instance it would also hit crafters who never face death. Also it would be a guaranteed gold sink hitting each however often (month?).

Just my two cents, but I don't think this would be fair to those who can't or don't play their accounts as often as others. If I can only play once a month, I shouldn't have to put all my earnings towards paying a maintenance fee.

Not really for this idea, but one way to make it more fair would be as a function of playtime, with a cap of some sort.

Maybe a better idea is to tie it in to a tax system of some sort, based on bankbox weight, or housepoints used, etc, at least then it fits into the game scenario, possibly. As I said though, it is not an idea I am in favor of.

Can someone explain to me why there is a need for goldsinks?
Does gold cause Lag on the system?

Why do we as players on WOD need to put our gold anywhere else but our banks?

if we don't remove gold in fairly large amounts from the game then it just accumulates at a considerable rate. this leads to inflation which hurts new players worse than oldbies. if a newb wants to bid on something on the auctioneer he has to compete with established players who may have accumulated many millions of gp. in theory you see swords of maiming say or moderate buffs start selling for 150k or something silly like that.
