WoD Art contest

Postby Drocket on Fri Feb 13, 2004 5:42 pm

I'd just like to announce a little contest for any artists we may have here on the shard: as most of you have probably noticed, I've added a number of paintings that can be double-clicked to be viewed in the last couple of versions of the WoD files. Since it seems to be a pretty popular feature, I'd like to add some more. It would be nice to have some original pictures, but unfortunately, I have very little art skill :)

So, I'm holding a contest to try to get some interesting and unique artwork: assuming that anyone actually enters (I'm a pessimist, I know :P), I'll post any and all submissions here on the boards and allow everyone to vote on their favorite. The winner's picture will be added to the WoD files, and the player will be given a copy of their picture (as an in-game item) as the reward. In addition, a second copy will be placed in Britian Bank for everyone to enjoy.

Random boring details for people interested in entering
*Submit entries to me at drocket@drocket.net. Entries should be in jpg format (or gif, or png, or some other common compressed format. No 5 megabyte bmps please) Please include your WoD accountname and the character name that you want me to post your entry under
*Entries should be submitted by February 29th
*The final picture in-game will probably be about 320x240 pixels (though oriented whatever direction you prefer.) I'd prefer that you submit a larger version of the picture, though (say, 640x480 or higher) so I can post it to the front page of the website. Also, I may need to make some minor tweaks to it (for color especially) because the UO picture format is rather picky and annoying to work with, and its just easier to do that with a larger picture that's later shrunk down.
*World of Dream administration reserves the right to reject application based on content (AKA: no naked people, please :P)

Random legal junk
*Artwork submitted must be an original work of which the submitter is legal copywrite owner. Submission of a piece of artwork grants WoD the right to use that piece of artwork in-game and on the WoD website for non-commecial use , blah, blah, blah. To summ up, you can't steal someone else's artwork, and you can't sue us if you change your mind later :P

Awesome :)

Btw, any chance we could have some classic renaissance paintings on top of any submissions? I've always dreamt of having a Last Supper or Mona Lisa adorning my walls :P

If you have Windows XP or ME, it can save as a JPG (when you go to save, you can change the type.) I'm not certain if the version of Paint included in Windows 95 or 98 is able to do that or not. I really don't want people sending me BMPs because the files for BMPs are usually very large and would probably fill up my email inbox.

You'd probably be best served by getting a better image editing program, though. There are a number of decent ones that are available for free, with much better tools than are available in Paint. One that I know of is ImageForge (not that that's a major recommendation - I haven't used it much, though I have tried it. Probably someone here could suggest others.)

I'm sure that I'll add other paintings, as well. I'm not sure about the Last Supper, though - that carries a number of rather strange connotations, not the least of which is whether Jesus ever visited Britainnia. I'd rather not get involved in that sort of discussion :)

One more thing: I'd appreciate it if anyone that's considering entering would post here and say so. I'd like to get an idea if this is something that people are interested in doing and worth pursuing further, or if its something that's just not going to happen.

You're right. Unfortunately for us, it's kinda tough to find any good (or well-known) early-to-high renaissance paintings that do not display Judeo-Christian themes. The Gioconda, not a true painting but protrait, is an exception. At the same time, however, most of the renaissance art could be seen as revival of the classical (Greco-Roman) art forms, and we have plenty of sculptures, wall carvings, and other stuff in UO that cannot be explained from the basic storyline (was the Avatar a classicist who decided to bring all his Greco-roman paraphanilia with him?).
Anyhow, I thought of renaissance works since it's one of the high points of western art. To me the renaissance, baroque, rococo, neoclassical and romatic artwork is some of the best in Western culture. I'm sure you can find something that's not too blantantly Christian from those periods. The latter more modern stuff (like Van Gogh for example) I find rather insipid, IMHO. But then what do I know? :P

Whatever you want, for the most part. A portrait of your character would work (though that may be a tad egotistical and not terrible interesting for most other players :) ) A picture of an interesting WoD location would be nice, or maybe a picture depicting a major battle (a nice way to show off your character without being boring :) )

I would be more then happy to submit something. I have designed graphics for webpages for years. My only question is if you are looking for something medievilish, WoDish, UOish, or just something abstract with a sword in it? :D

Whatever you want. I'd rather like it to look painting-ish (if you know what I mean. Something that could possibly be painted or drawn as a real item. Shiny 3d rendered graphics would probably look out-of-place, I think, and animated GIFs are right out. :) ) Beyond that, its up to you.

Well I have an old web directory full of old JPG's and art's that I have from a few OSI guild web pages I designed. I could send you the link to that if you want.

I will try to come up with one also. Part of the challenge is making something that will still appear somewhat recognizable when it is shrunk down to the dimensions of the actual pictures on the walls. That will take some thought. :? :)
