Fishing Frustrations

Postby Malachai on Fri Jun 11, 2004 2:53 am

I have really got to ask because I need to know if it's me or a bug, but evertime I fish with nets, I die.

I really dig fishing, but I get terminally bored using a pole so I switched over to nets. Cyric, my fisherman, isn't the toughest nail in the shed, but it seems like every second net I drop, a tentacle beast pops who, of course, kills me. It seems like they get stuck on my boat so that no matter what way I try to sail, it's stays right there.

Should I fire my tillerman. He's so good at ressurection I'd hate to lose him, but he seems to be a lousy sailor.

My boat's too small to hold the army it seems I need to fend off these creatures of the deep, and I don't want to re-spec my tank just to do some fishing.

Fishing seems like the hardest tradeskill, and I don't think it's as profitable as it once was. There doesn't seem to be the clamor for all the shipwreck items, and people don't seem to be beating down my cooks door to buy any fishsteaks.

I'm certainly not asking for a complete nerf to these creatures, but maybe they could be looked at or their spawn rate at least.

Thanks! :)

one tentacle beast is easy compared to what you can pull up fishing - it's not like a crafting skill
I have it as my tank's tradeskill for some interesting hunting

Well, 1st off, if you're only getting ONE tentacle beast or mob from a net cast .... then you're doing something wrong - LOL. Ok , maybe not wrong, but it would sound like you don't have fishing maxxed out at 100+ skill ... because my fisher (also my tank) has 110 fishing, and it's a rare net cast when he doesn't get at least two tentacles, or two wave ellies, or some combination of 2-3 mobs from a cast. Which is why I pulled fishing from my (originally) mage character, and put it on my tank because the mage was getting clobbered each and every time he cast, whereas the tank can duke it out with the tentacles (swapping fishing and mining - mining is easy for a mage :) . And the tank has archery at 60, so he can at least do some damage to the spellcasters while they float alongside.

As Wolfie said: fishing, although it's a tradeskill, needs excellent combat capabilities to maximize the skill. Sure, you can just pole fish, get a few fish, the occasional map or mib, and occasionally spawn a wave ellie or somesuch, but the rewards from net casting (and trawling) are so much better. But so is the danger.
What tradeskill do you have on your tank that would be so hard to swap with your fisherman?

2-3 mobs is usual and not bad for a good tank, but those times you pull up 5 really hurt

This is intresting I went the other way with fishing, I did have it on my VG, seemed like a reasonable choice but more often than not what I ended up with was 1 or 2 dead henchmen. I first took fishing off him and stuck it on my at-the-time mage tamer. While doing the actual net-fishing that worked a lot better but going for the actual mib's was a pain due to the dragon taking off while sailing from location to location so I moved fishing to my nothing special he's-just-a-mage and that seems to work best. For really bad pulls (4+ tenticles and a coupel waves) chain lightning works wonders, though you do have to be a little careful about watching your health bar.

Malachai,
Forgot the most obvious (although not always the most personally preferred) tactic. Take someone along with you :) Unless their fishing skill is a prime or the tradeskill, most landlubbers have never seen (and won't believe) what kind of challenges you get when net fishing. Take one or two along to show them - besides, they make great bait

Whenever Pau my fisherman goes fishing, he tries to talk Ki'Anna (a talented and beautiful fisherwoman) and her husband Raiden into going with, and we do dual nets. Talk about exciting!

Yep, the mobs usually do go after your companion. I've had a couple people die on my boat but never me, hehe.

I guess I never realized just how tough it was. I think I just may re-spec Malachai until Cyric gets stronger because I do enjoy it.

Thanks everyone for the advice. :)

believe it or not where you stand can have a significant impact on your fishing survival odds. there are sweet spots at each end of your ship which only allow a single monster to reach you at once. this is a GOOD thing to know.
