Gabrielle, I agree wholeheartedly that the oldbies of the land should mentor the newer players, but for that to work the newer players have to WANT to learn. Edison has tried to set up group hunting practices, Leia Ranar tried to do a buddy hunt pairing one newer player with an older one, I tried to set up classes to learn strategies and tactics etc etc etc, and there simply wasn't enough interest. It appears that people want to learn on their own.

I agree full heartedly, i would love to learn from someone else rather then my own, i find it harder to learn on my own, and as anyone can see i die pretty often LOL

i do ask for help alot but often wonder if people think im pestering them, i hope thats not the case but you never know

This morning when Garth attempted to go hunting he was met by a horde of unfriendly critters (as grandpa would call them), After hours of killing and a few deaths we walked away. Not with our pockets full but with our hearts full. I hunted with a group today that worked as a team. We had a few deaths but we quickly got them up and going and were on with the fight. I do not believe anyone on that quest today showed concern for gold, In fact i handed all of mine to a new player sitting on the bench in the bank and wished him luck.

I guess my point is- Most if not all of us enjoy the quests that seers and staff have put together. I wish there were a way to express our appeciation. I know Maddox and i do believe he had no idea of the reprocussions of his words. I take pride in saying he is my friend.

Anyone who is in need of gold for death taxes and they can not afford to pay them. If i have it- i would share in a heartbeat. Its only a pixel on the screen and he who has the most gold when the server goes down does not win!!

It was painful watching it all fall apart so fast wasn't it. We'd all been doing so well. Maybe next time will be perfect :).

I have to admit...I did try team work, and personally I enjoyed it up till the server reboot when I went to bed.

I being a Virtue Guard felt it was my duty to help in anyway possible in completeing this quest and I did. Sure I died .. I died alot maybe 5 times but you know what? I really dont care about dieing.. I see each fight as what it is, a battle to the death, some you win some you lose. You lose you die, its simple you loose alittle skill get ressed and move on.

I would personally like to thank the seer's and GM that put this together.. I got sheer enjoyment out of defending and killing those who threaten our lands.

Thanks,

I have done some tmaps with people and helped rescue a player or two, but I'm not up to par on quest tactics. I tend to stay away from them unless I just fall on top of it. I would love to learn the tactics of large group fighting. Plus one of my family members has taken up a new skill. No one in the family has taken up a Bard skill before. So any help with this would be greatly appriecated.

I had this big long post wrote out, but I lost my point, so I'm starting over.

I think Maddox was mistreated in the beginning of this thread. I congradulate those that stood up for him, and Maddox for not falling to that same level in retaliation.

I think people are forgetting some things about quests and the way they are handled. A lot of people always talking about quest etiquette. To be honest with you, I only agree with about half of it. That doesn't mean I will sit out of the quests because of it. I think that a dragon is stronger than my warrior. I would gladly accept a dragon into my hunting party (provided that the thing has a tamer attached to it, of course), but I know that the quest etiquette thing says.. no dragons on quests. I look at the quest etiquette as a good base. A strong foundation by which a group can build a strong hunting party. The real deal is that 10 warriors in a hunting party will act differently than 10 mages in a hunting party. You can't always do it this way and not that way. Spice it up, allow for differences and have fun. It's just a game.
Allow for some diversity, basically. Everyone who has played UO for any length of time, not matter what shard, has a way that they do things. Perhaps they are powerful solo fighters, but weak in a group, or the opposite. Maybe a mage is a great offensive weapon, but not so great at defense. Oh well.. I'm not going to complain because some guy wants to run ahead and bring a bunch of monsters back to the party, surprising and most often causing a few deaths. Why? Because I wouldn't waste my time playing a boring game where everyone does the same thing at the same time. How utterly dull that would be. People are different, they play different. Live with it.

Oh, I don't care about loot either. Take it all away. My dude, Thomas Duklain(my one fighter), goes into battle to rid the world of evil, and to him gold only promotes men to be evil. He collects what he needs and spends it accordingly, but does not want for it. So take it all away, who cares.. I'm here for the friendly fun quests and the story.

It isn't my intention to fan the flames on this thread. I just got done reading all those posts, and so felt compelled to add my peice. If you agree with me, that's nice. If you don't, good for you. Enjoy your day, nevertheless.

Dang... I am really tempted to say: "Can't we all just..." (well, you know the rest :P ).

Lots of good opinions pro and con. The overall sense I get though is this: Listen to the established players and it will be more profitable and more fun and We wish the older players would lead more and/or teach more.

There are lots of reasons why the older players are reluctant or tired of leading quests. Some of the recent quest behavior is a major part of it. Partly, they've just done it too many times for too long.

However, having said that, almost all of them will help out if you ask them. If you start a quest and say to yourself: **Hmmm, we could probably use someone experienced on this one**... and then go and ask one of the older players to lead the group, I bet they would accept the challenge. :D

Life in WoD is like life anywhere. Show some appreciation and respect for the experienced players (and the staff, for that matter) and you will get much better results. Show them disdain for their opinions, on the other hand, and they are not likely to want to help you.

Just a thought,

-Augur

I hope I don't offend anyone with my post...it really isn't my intent. It is my observation though, that perhaps some of the oldbies are being a bit hard on some of the less experienced people. I don't think anyone is DELIBERATELY trying to create chaos - but there are a lot of factors to consider during quests. For example, I have been on a number of group quests, and in very few of them - if there even WAS an experienced player in that particular group - did that person step forward and explain to the newcomers what was expected and assign duties to people (ie: you heal her and her... you take point...you do this...you two stay together...)In most quests I have participated in, discussion is limited to who is going to do the looting. If no one tells people what to do, how can we be expected to know? Now, even if there has been some discussion - well, were the late comers filled in? People are always arriving late to quests...how do they know what is going on? Many new people don't read the forums and probably don't even know your etiquette or realize they have accidentally infuriated you. I realize many of you have been hunting together for years and have your roles down to a tee...but many of us are still learning where we fit in...myself included. Before I came to WoD, although I played on OSI, I never hunted with a group...in fact, I rarely hunted because I usually got PK'd. Here on WoD, I am learning (slowly), finally to be a decent mage, but I know I still have a LONG way to go to ever get anywhere near as good as some of the older players...and for the times when I have done something stupid, I apologize, I swear I will eventually get the hang of group dynamics...but it really WOULD help if an oldbie said "ok, I'm in charge...Nia, do this..." I think a lot of newbies would be interested in ingame training (I would love the opportunity to hunt with some of the older players more often and learn more)...but again, a lot of them probably don't read the boards. Could we maybe decide on a date and msg people in game? Perhaps it isn't lack of interest...just that they aren't aware.
